About Bioinformatics
Ground-breaking advances in Genomics and Proteomics brought about by the Human Genome Project have given birth to Bioinformatics - a new scientific discipline at the cross-roads of biology, medicine and information technology. The sequencing of genomes of Homo sapiens, Arabidopsis thaliana (thale cress), C. elegans (worm), Danio rerio (zebrafish) and Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly), among many others is only the first step towards the discovery process that is aimed eventually at devising new methods and technologies to address our unmet medical needs.

These are the kind of questions that biologists are now trying to address. The next few decades will be completely consumed in research that leads to answers to these issues. The need to analyze genetic data has lead to the growth of powerful technologies that enable researchers to study the regulation of tens of thousands of genes at the same time. Bioinformatics combined with biological validation is the solution.
To be able to perform these information intensive tasks, scientists and clinicians must be comfortable with both the biological and the computational/programming aspects of Bioinformatics, especially with the Perl programming language, which is currently the work-horse of Bioinformatics.
